Academic Planning & Graduation

Use these resources to understand diploma requirements, build your Academic and Career Plan, monitor graduation progress, and make informed choices throughout high school.

Diploma Requirements

Graduation requirements are based on the year a student first entered ninth grade. The requirements below apply to students who entered ninth grade in 2018-2019 or later, which includes MPHS students currently enrolled in grades 9-12.

Standard Diploma

22 standard credits + 5 verified credits

Students must also complete the additional graduation requirements established by Virginia, including an advanced course, work-based learning experience, or approved credential; a virtual learning experience; CPR/AED training; and demonstration of the Five C's.

Advanced Studies Diploma

26 standard credits + 5 verified credits

This diploma includes additional coursework in mathematics, laboratory science, history and social science, and world language, along with Virginia's additional graduation requirements.

Other diploma pathways: Eligible students may pursue an Applied Studies Diploma or another completion pathway based on individual needs and applicable requirements. Families should work directly with the student's school counselor and, when applicable, IEP team.

Academic & Career Plans

Every student develops a personal Academic and Career Plan that connects graduation requirements, course choices, career interests, and postsecondary goals. The plan should be reviewed regularly as interests and goals change.

Your online plan is a starting point. A school counselor can help you understand how course choices, graduation requirements, credentials, and college admissions expectations fit together.

Diploma Seals

Students who meet specific requirements and demonstrate exemplary performance may earn one or more diploma seals. Available seals include recognition for academic achievement, career and technical education, STEM, civics, biliteracy, and science and the environment. Requirements vary by seal.

Explore Virginia Diploma Seals

Students should ask their counselor which seals may apply to their graduation plan and how eligibility is verified.

Promotion, Retention & Remediation

MPCS policies explain how students advance from grade to grade, when retention may be considered, and how additional instruction or remediation is provided when a student needs support.
